MONDAY 6TH JUNE
Acts 2.1-21; Joel 2.28-32
Nine o’clock in the morning

Jesus had instructed His disciples to wait in Jerusalem and do nothing until they received the promise of the Father: Jesus would baptize them with the Holy Spirit. Ten days later, when the Day of Pentecost arrived, they all experienced a mighty out-pouring of the Holy Spirit. What a sudden transformation they experienced. A bunch of frightened people burst out of the upper room in which they had been hiding. They were so excited, so happy, so joyful. When they heard the sound of rushing, mighty wind, when the tongues of fire rested on their heads and when they all began to speak in languages they had never learnt, they knew Jesus had kept His promise and they were all filled with God’s Holy Spirit!

When people saw all this exuberance they accused them of being drunk. Peter got up and proclaimed with great power and authority in his speech, “These men are not drunk as you suppose, it’s only nine o’clock in the morning.” (The pubs weren’t open yet!) He told the crowd that the prophecy of the Old Testament in Joel 2.28-32 had been fulfilled. God had poured out His Holy Spirit on all people. God was speaking to His people through visions and dreams and prophecies and causing absolutely wonderful things to happen in people’s lives. As the disciples spoke in ‘tongues’ God enabled them to speak in the languages of the people in the crowd who came from many different countries. They all heard a fantastic message from God in their own language.

Once, when we were in India with a SOMA team, we prayed for a priest called Michael to be filled with the Holy Spirit. A few weeks later he was ministering to tribal people called Billi. He was speaking to them through an interpreter when all of a sudden the Spirit fell upon him and he heard himself speaking in the Billi language, telling them how much Jesus loved them!

Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever and He is longing to pour out His Holy Spirit on all of us today. The Holy Spirit makes God so real and we experience Jesus coming alive in our hearts as He gets rid of all the sins we have committed. We must expect Him to do the same for us as He did for the apostles. He enables us to speak in languages we’ve never learnt, to speak God’s message and see wonderful things happening in our lives.

PRAYER: Jesus, baptiser in the Holy Spirit, pour out your Holy Spirit upon all of us today. Give us power to proclaim the Good News and power to enable us to bring many, many people to salvation and faith in you. Amen.

TUESDAY 7TH JUNE
Psalm 104.24-35
When you send the Spirit they are created

God’s Holy Spirit is what keeps us all alive. If He were to take His Spirit from us we would all die and all forms of life would die. This is what He is telling us in this psalm. Each one of us is made up of three parts: body, soul and spirit. The body is our physical part; the soul is our thinking part (the mind) and our emotions. The spirit is the invisible centre of our being. Before we are filled with the Spirit, our spirits are dead. When we are converted and saved by putting our faith in what Jesus did for us and when we are baptized, God breathes His Spirit into us and our spirits come alive. This new life in us is so powerful it can never die. It is called eternal life. When the Holy Spirit makes our spirits come alive we are recreated into completely new beings. We are born again. We are saved from death and brought to life! Our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life and we are assured that we will be with Jesus for ever (Revelation 21.27).

Isn’t that absolutely fantastic! Non-believers find it very hard to accept the Good News of Jesus Christ, even though the Gospel is such a fantastic message, which we believe no one can possibly ignore. They do not hear it because their spirits are dead. When God begins to move in their lives and they can be persuaded to accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour, to believe He died on the cross to take their sins away, then Jesus will come and breathe the Holy Spirit into their spirits and make them come alive. Then Jesus opens the eyes of their hearts (spirit – Ephesians 1.18) and they can see the truth and see how absolutely fantastic God’s Word is. The Bible comes alive for them and they love hearing the wonderful truths it teaches.

PRAYER: Father God, we know you created us all to have eternal life and be with you for ever. We pray for all non-believers whose spirits are dead that they may be persuaded to accept Jesus as Saviour and Lord and experience the fullness of salvation as Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit into them and makes their spirits come alive, so they are recreated into new persons, born again in your spirit, through Jesus our most wonderful Lord and Saviour. Amen.

WEDNESDAY 8TH JUNE
1 Corinthians 12.1-13
We are the body of Christ
His Spirit is with us

The mighty works of Jesus that have brought health and salvation to many thousands of people did not stop when Jesus went back to heaven. As He saved people, washed away their sins and made them holy, He welded them together to form for Him a new body. The other name for this is the Church. Beginning at the Day of Pentecost and progressing right down to the present day, Jesus has been baptizing His followers with His Holy Spirit and incorporating them into His body. Jesus is head of this body. A prerequisite for membership is that all accept the headship of Jesus. All have to acclaim, “Jesus Christ is Lord!” Only those who are filled with the Spirit are enabled to accept the full control that Jesus has to have. Not every member of the body is empowered to do all the things Jesus did. Jesus gives out different gifts through the Holy Spirit to all the members. Each one has a part to play in the Body of Christ. As the Holy Spirit works through every member, He gives the power for that person to perform the task Jesus has planned for him to do.

Here are some of the multitude of gifts:

  1. A message or word of wisdom enabling the body to make the right decisions.
  2. A message of knowledge. God reveals supernaturally, knowledge about people to enable the body to minister to them effectively.
  3. Faith. A gift to enable people to trust God for His provisions to the body and for healing and salvation.
  4. Gifts of Healing. Some members are endowed with this special gift. As they lay hands on people they see Jesus heal them.
  5. Miraculous powers to do mighty things for God.
  6. Prophecy. The ability to hear God speaking directly to the body.
  7. Discernment of spirits, to enable the body to see if it is the Holy Spirit operating or an enemy evil spirit.
  8. The ability to speak in different languages, which the Spirit gives people, commonly known as ‘speaking in tongues.’
  9. The interpretation of tongues. The ability to discover what God is saying to the body when a member gives a message.

PRAYER: Jesus, our Lord, pour down your Holy Spirit upon us. Make us into a very powerful body. Enable each of us to use the gifts which the Holy Spirit gives us. Amen.

THURSDAY 9TH JUNE
NUMBERS11: 24-30,
I wish all the Lord’s people spoke God’s messages

As we look at this Old Testament passage, we see that Moses had been over-burdened with ministry. He could not handle all that he had to do. God told him to appoint 70 elders. As they prayed, God took the Spirit which was on Moses and put it on the seventy elders. As this happened they were all given the ability to hear God speaking to them which enabled them to be used in the ministry. Two people had not been in the meeting, Medad and Eldad. They, too, received the Spirit. Joshua tried to stop them, but Moses would not let him. He said, “I wish that all the Lord’s people spoke His message.

God moves in many different ways and we must never think the way we receive help from Him is the only way. That’s why there are many different denominations of the Christian Church. God speaks through all of them. As God speaks to them He draws them closer to effective ministry. Up until recent times, most churches had left all the ministry to the priests and pastors and ministers, whatever they were called. At Synod a few years ago, Archbishop Hollingworth said that there needs to be a paradigm shift in the Church. This shift is from all the ministry being done by the parish priest to every member of each congregation sharing the ministry. This is exactly what God wants and how Jesus started the Church in the time of the Acts of the Apostles. Each one of us needs to get on our knees before the Lord and completely surrender our lives to Him. We should ask for a fresh anointing of the Holy Spirit and ask how He wants to use us in His body. A danger in all this is for people to hive off and do their own thing. Body ministry and every member ministry only works where each member is totally submitted to Jesus and the leadership of the Church.

PRAYER: Father, pour out your Holy Spirit on your church in all its groups and denominations. Give out your gifts to enable the work of ministry to be shared by all, through Jesus Christ. Amen.

FRIDAY 10TH JUNE
Galatians 5.13-26
How to build a strong church

When the Holy Spirit falls on the Church it is given not only the gifts of the Spirit, but also the fruits of the Spirit. As the gifts enable the Church to continue the works and ministry of Jesus, so the fruits of the Spirit enable the church to be holy and to be like Jesus. Jesus said, “By their fruit you will recognize them” (Matthew 7.16). The devil can counterfeit and copy spiritual gifts, but he can’t copy the fruits of the Holy Spirit. The devil always comes in to divide and destroy. He loves to lure people in to the acts of the sinful nature. There is a big list of them in verses 20-22. If people live like this, they will be lost. They will not inherit eternal life in God’s kingdom. When people start to live by the Holy Spirit and put away the need to gratify the desires of the sinful nature, soon we see their lives blossoming and all the fruits of the Holy Spirit appear! The fruits of the Spirit are so wonderful. Let’s see if we can make them all grow in our lives. Here are some of them: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. We cannot make any of these fruits grow by ourselves. They are fruits of the Holy Spirit. We are like the branches of a grape vine; before we can grow and bear fruit we have to be grafted onto the vine. Jesus is the vine; we are the branches. As long as we remain grafted into Him the sap of the Holy Spirit flows and all the fruit can be seen in us. Growing good fruit involves pruning. The sinful human nature in us must be crucified. It must be completely pruned away. This stops all the bad fruit growing and makes way for a crop of good fruit.

PRAYER: Father, our desire is to be like Jesus. As we surrender to you, prune away our sinful human natures so none of Satan’s fruit can grow in us. Fill us with your Holy Spirit so all the fruit of the Spirit may grow in us in great abundance, through Jesus the Vine. Amen.

SATURDAY 11TH JUNE
John 20.19-23; 7.37-39
Rivers of living water

Jesus is the source of all life. When the ground takes in water all the plants come alive and grow. When we receive Jesus, we, too, come alive in our spirits. Jesus pours His Holy Spirit into our hearts and they become wells of living water. Before Jesus could pour the Holy Spirit into our hearts, He had to be glorified. He was glorified when He finished the work the Father had sent Him to do. That was to go to the cross and present Himself as a sacrifice to take all of our sins away; that was, to pay the penalty our sins deserve and to purify our hearts so we could be made worthy for the Holy Spirit to dwell in them.

On the evening of the first Easter Day the glorified Jesus appeared to the disciples. Now it was time that they could receive the Spirit. When Jesus breathed on them the Holy Spirit, their spirits came alive. Their hearts were made worthy for God to dwell in them. For the first time they were truly born again. No wonder they were so happy and so filled with joy! As Jesus cleansed their hearts from sin by blowing His Holy Spirit into them, so He gave them the power to forgive the sins of others. They could do this for the price of all sins had been paid for. The power Jesus released when He died on the cross was revealed. It is the power to make people holy; power to make them worthy to receive the Holy Spirit. There was still more to come. When Jesus breathed on them the Holy Spirit in the upper room, He was preparing their hearts for a later filling. If you like, He was digging a well in each of their hearts. It was not until the Day of Pentecost that He filled these wells up and caused rivers of living water to flow from them.

PRAYER: Father, we thank you that when Jesus was glorified on the cross, He purified our hearts and made them ready to be filled. Breathe your Holy Spirit and let rivers of living water flow from us helping you to set many people free, through Jesus our glorified Saviour. Amen.

SUNDAY 12TH. June
THE DAY OF PENTECOST
THIS WEEK’S MESSAGE

Today is one of the most wonderful days In the Church’s year because we remember When God poured out His Holy Spirit on the church and brought it to life.

One hundred and twenty of Jesus closest followers were gathered together to celebrate the Jewish feast of Pentecost (Harvest Thanksgiving). They had been praying continually since the Ascension, ten days before.

As they were praying Jesus kept His promise to them. He gave them the Holy Spirit. They were filled with power as the Holy Spirit came upon them. The power of the Holy Spirit gave them fantastic new life. It enabled them to be like Jesus and to do all the mighty things that Jesus had done.

Because the Church was given new life on that day we often call it the Church’s birthday.

It’s the day when the Church became the on earth.

When we are filled with the Holy Spirit He makes Jesus and the Father very real to us. He opens the eyes and ears of our hearts so we can see Jesus and hear Him speaking. He makes the Bible come alive and makes us sure that It is the Word of God!

Sometimes we do go wrong and grieve the Holy Spirit and He leaves us and we lose ..to fill us again with the Holy Spirit. His power.

To get back on track we have to repent and be cleansed by the Blood of Jesus and ask Him l let’s pray that we at all will receive a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit as we Celebrate the feast of Pentecost Today.

PRAYER: Father, you promised that you would pour out Your Holy Sprit on the disciples and give them power to be Your witnesses. Pour out your Holy Spirit on your Church today. Empower us to win the world for You. Please endow us with the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit to equip us for Your ministry. Through Jesus our glorified Saviour. Amen.
